My daughters Amana dryer gets too hot and shuts off. She had the vent line checked but it still gets too hot and shuts off.

What's the most likely cause?

Gene, as a result of your questions I had an "in-depth" discussion of the problem with my daughter this morning.

Here's what she said:

1. The vent line was checked by the condo maintenance man who said the vent to the outside was clear. He went a step further and said the problem was in the dryer's vent system (the dryer belongs to my daughter). I don't know how he knows the problem is "in the dryers vent system" but that's what he told her. She said he used a tool to make sure the vent from the dryer to the outside was clear/open. He made it clear that the problem was in her dryer and not in the vent line to the outside. So I guess we can rule out the vent line as a potential problem.

2. She said the dryer shuts down completely (heat and entire unit) and will not restart again for up to an hour or so. But, she said sometimes it will restart immediately.

3. She said the dryer will run sometimes for up to 1.5 hours before it will shut down........and the clothes still aren't dry after that length of time.......so the dryer is NOT overheating after all. The dryer is just not drying the clothes but it's shutting off and not being able to restart after maybe an hour and a half. Sounds like the dryer is not getting hot enough to dry the clothes..........but how could that be? I would think the dryer's "heating element" either works or it doesn't work. I would tend to rule out the heating element as the problem. In other words, the heating element works or it doesn't work.

4. She finally added this one important bit of information. She said she took the vent line loose from the back of the dryer and put her hand back in the dryers internal vent line and it was full of lint........it seems lint is building up "in the dryer's vent system" for some reason.

Gene, I hope this makes sense to you.......if you need specific information just ask away. She has 3 kids (ages 9, 11, and 13) and I'd like to help her get the dryer fixed as soon as possible.
