Wash load came out with rust colored streaks that looked like grease stains. I found a trace of waxy brown gunk below the wash plate. There was also some water inside the u-joint and the o-ring showed signs of failure. The outer suface of the stainless steel tub was covered with the waxy gunk. I used grill cleaner and steam to get it clean. The plastic tub which I did not remove was clean except for some mildew at the top.
I bought the u-joint kit, which obviously need replacing.
Before I install it, can anyone tell me where the gunk came from? If lubricant came up the drive shaft, I would think that water would get out. There's no evidence of a leak below the washer. Is there lube sealed in the u-joint?

your machine has no transmission or anything that would leak like oil , all it has is a spin tube and a motor underneath the gunk is undissolved soap or fabric softner covered with dirt liquid detergent and fabric softner is bad news for a washing machine while you are at it fixing it you should replace the pump and motor as well they have come out with a more robust pump that won't sieze from a string being in it like the OEM pump would

Thank you. I was hoping the gunk was what you say it is - just didn't think it would be that bad. The pump motor was replaced by Sears a few years ago.
