Hi, s x s fridge/freezer not working, however, unit sits on back porch and in summer and hot weather works fine, when it gets cold outside it stops working and freezer defrosts. I turned up thermostat for freezer and fan came on but after a while went off again and not sure what this is! last year same thing, by spring all was well and 98 deg temp, no problem, winter, temp drops and it defrosts. Any suggestions ? Lights on nothings on.

Sounds like a very common problem with outside fridges.

What happens is that after a defrost cycle the compressor does not come back on because of the ambient temperature so the heat from the defrost is held in the freezer side and it melts the food.

I do know there is a kit available for top freezer units but have never seen one for side by sides.

Here is a bit more info

Note: It hard on a compressor if it is run at much below freezing as the oil in the compressor thickens so you do not get good lubrication.

I did think being out side might be key in some way, but could not put my finger on it maybe if if i put a light bulb down by compressor compartment it would keep it warmer and wrap back lower part with insulation to keep heat in better till i build a small room heated out there..:)
