my whirlpool dishwasher wont stop letting water in is there a float switch on them

Yes it does have a float (Item 32 in Section 3), it operates the switch (Item 30 in Section 3)

On most units float switches are just an overflow safety.

If the only way to shut the water off is by shutting off the water supply then odds are that the water valve is shot.
