 When washer is in agitation cycle, washer makes loud rubbing sound (sounds like rubber rubbing on a steel shaft) that seems to come from transmission. The spin cycle sounds normal. Washer runs complete cycle and successfully completes wash. Warranty has run out. Am I in for big trouble? Do I need to install a new transmission?

Hi Ed,

The first thing I would do is lift up the washer from the front, remove the belt and check the pump by rotating the pump pulley manually. If does not move freely then replace the pump.

- The part number for the pump is AP3447809

Also, look into the tub as it agitates. Does the basket turn in the opposite direction as it agitates? This would indicate a bad brake.

I checked pump as Gene suggested and pump moves freely. Noise comes from transmission. I looked into tub as Magician 59 recommended and basket does turn in the opposite direction as it agitates. How do I repair a bad brake?

This may not explain all the noise, but it is an indication of a brake wearing out.

You probably have bad brake shoes, or ones that are oil soaked. Pull front panel and check above the tranny for a bad seal.
This is a big repair job to replace both tub bearing and tranny brake.
Go to web site maytag atlantis washer repair spin bearing thats noisy, diy for a procedure.
