While the washer was operating I smelled smoke and as I was trying to find it I lifted the top of the washer and I saw smoke coming out from the side of the drum. Is it the belt or the motor?

Could be either one if it smelled like rubber its the belt if it smelled electrical it's the motor you'll have to remove the front panel by releasing the clips with a putty knife and look a little closer at it
