defective cycle control knob won't push in; need to grasp & turn wash cycle dial.

The cycle control knob will not push in. This means that the larger dial with the wash settings (e.g. permanent press, regular, delicate, etc.) needs to be tuned by hand. As the control knob will not push in, the water fill & spin cycles go on as we turn past them while setting the desired wash cycle.
What parts do I need?
Can I fix this myself...what degree of difficulty on range of 1 - 10 (10 hardest)?

It sounds like you need to replace the timer. About a medium-difficulty job. Just make sure the machine is unplugged before you begin. Pay close attention to the wire connections as you're replacing the timer. I usually transfer the wires one at a time, just as a precaution.
