It doesn't seem to matter what size load is being washed, the machine shakes and walks away from the wall, making a very loud noise while doing so. Machine is on a concrete floor and is level front to rear and side to side. It appears that the load is not balanced when looking inside the machine. Six bras will sometimes cause the problem and other times a sheet or blanket will be the culprit. Upon examination inside the cabinet there is some white powder substance in a circle inside the tension spring base circle

That white powder is coming from a worn snubber pad. That pad needs to be replaced. Not an easy task. It probably screeches when the tub comes to a stop after the spin cycle too. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Thanks kayakcrzy I kind of thought that after looking at the stackup in the repair manual. I am 73 yrs old and I think it is too big a job for me to tackle. I am very handy but will probably pass on this one. I appreciate your response.

You definetly made the right decision. Just don't go back and buy a Maytag. Buy a Whirlpool, and keep it simple, no electronics. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Make sure you buy a Whirlpool "direct drive top loader washer".

kayakcrzy I ordered a snubber and six tension springs. Called a repairman. Setup an appointment and had him install the items. He said it would take about an hour. I had everything unhooked for him, (water, drain and electric) even had a nice place for him to work in the garage. Any way 55 minutes later he had completed the installation and the washer was put into operation. It works like a new one. I also had him put some corn starch in the area where snubber makes contact with the base. The snubber was completely destroyed. The new springs were just a precaution since it was down that far there was no reason to not change them.j
Thanks again for the advice. Service Tech said it wasn't very often a customer had already diagnosed the problem. Dan Canrad

Glad to help! The corn starch was a great idea. The factory told us to use baby powder. But, corn starch would do the same. I also agree with you on the springs. Good Job, and happy washing. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
