I have an Amana washing machine. Yesterday during the spin cycle it started making a very loud noise, like a very fast clacking. I open the front panel. If I spin the belt the way it is turning then it looks like it must make that clacking from the way the gear is made on the bottom of the tub. If I turn the belt the other way it spins the tub. It almost looks like the moter is now spining the incorrect direction. But I don't understand why that gear at the bottom of the tub would be designed to slip the other direction

Look at the arm, where the belt goes around. Alot of times the noise is coming from it because the belt is loose and worn, or the spring that connects to it could be worn out. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

when I get down there and spin the belt one way it spins the tub. when I spin it the other way the noise is coming from the gear directly below the center of the tub. I looks like the design is to work that way. as is turns in the direction thegear slides up over the other one and drops back down. This is what makes the sound. The way the gears are builti don't see who it could do otherwise.

I understand what you are saying but I don't know if you have to order the whole transmission. If so you will most likely need a water seal, when you take it off to get down the tranny. It might be more then you want to mess with, as far as dollars. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
