dryer gets extremely hot during normal drying cycles

Overheating can be caused by an obstruction of the air flow. Make sure the exhaust is clear, from the dryer, to the outside of the house. If it, I would replace the cycling thermostat. Part number: AP3131939
. Matter of fact, it's a good idea, as you replace one thermostat, to replace all of them as a set. Part number: AP3131939
