Hi all! Thanks for making forums like these to help DIY guys like myself get things fixed :)

So I have a Maytag A512 washing machine and for years it worked great. The drum started to get off center and so would constantly stop during the rinse cycle. I took off the front and held it centered and it would work fine. So I replaced the belts which were really worn, the damper pads and the two little springs under the motor. So now I have new problems and can't seem to find a cure. It will run fine until the spin cycle and it will start to spin up, and then I will hear clicking noises from the motor and then it shuts off. It won't restart for a while, but does the same thing. I often smell a slight burnt electonric smell. Then the few times we got it through the spin cycle, then it went right on to the next cycle without stopping. What should I check? The belts are not too tight underneath. I don't know what else could be wrong?

Sounds like the problem is a bad motor.

It appears it was the new springs I installed that go under the motor. they were too tight and did not let the belt slip when the motor spun up for the rinse spin, which over-taxed the motor and caused it to shut down. I put the old springs back on, and now it works fine. Thanks for your help - Jeff
