I have just replaced the part AP3995038 (Timer washer) and am trying to put the knob, the dial and the clip back onto the unit. I used hemostats to hold the clip to put it back on, but the dial is still turning freely, even though the clip is holding tightly. Now what I can try.......

If you look at the dial you will see that it has plastic teeth that engage the timer. In your case, the pastic teeth may have broken off and there is not enough of them left to engage the timer. Get a new timer knob and you should be all set. (Had one of these last week)
