Hi, I have a maytag atlantis mav6200aww that agitates but doent spin. It does drain and when I first start the spin cycle it moves about a quarter inch and stops. The pulley moves in both directions. When I have it on spin and spin the tub by hand it will move but not real easy. I was able to get it spinning once by spinning the tub over and over like a merry-go-round and it finally went and spun as normal. I thing it needs a thrust bearing kit. Any thoughts??

Sounds like you need to replace the thrust bearing.

That is what I am thinking. What would be the symptoms of a bad transmission.

Thanks Magic, since I dont hear any strange noises, I will try the thrust bearing kit. A couple more quick questions. Will I need any special tools and does the cam lifting up to release the brake also couple the shaft to the drum to spin it? What part of SE Texas, I used to live in Corpus.

The cam serves to separate the brake rotor from the stator. This tool is needed to replace the brake parts: http://www.************.com/dbI...es/00000605/00183603.jpg But I wouldn't buy one just for my personal washer. The Thrust bearing kit can be installed with basic hand tools, and a bit of patience, when it comes to installing the final c-clip. I'm in the greater Houston area. I live just outside of Tomball. I'm a 38 year veteran to the locksmith trade (Certified Master Lockwright), with just under two years' training and experience in appliance repair (EPA licensed for refrigerants). Yep...I'm a jack of (several) trades; master of ONE. How about you?

ASE Certified Master auto tech. 10 Year Navy vet, Army reservist. Moved back to Wisconsin after living in Corpus, wife couldnt stand the heat. The reason I was asking about the function of the cam was because when I first started looking at it I noticed the shaft on the bottom of the washer was spinning but not the tub. If the brake was stuck on, wouldn't that prevent that shaft and pulley from turning?

The brake only stops the motion of the spin. When going in the other direction, the shaft operates different parts of the gearcase internally. I grew up in Indiana. Always get homesick for the cool weather, Fall colors, and holiday trappings this time of year.

I like it until around the middle of January when its below zero for days on end. Well, I will put the thrust kit in tonight and cross my fingers. Thanks for your help.
