machine is now working but smell and smokes with the smell of rubber coming from the bottom near the motor area and what is involved in fixing it.

I would unplug the washer, and pull it away from the wall, and take the belt off. Then grab the pump pully and turn it and see if it spins freely. If not replace the pump and belt. If so, replace the belt. That would be a good place to start. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
