My drier worked fine one day. Next day nothing. Would not start. Motor not working. Smelled heat. Open door. Heating element ON. EVEN WITH DOOR OPEN. Removed drum. Checked volts at 2 main motor terminals. 120 volts. Pushed start switch. no change. Had to turn timer to off to get heating elements to turn off. Checked all wiring. Appears ok. elements should not be on with door open ???? This dryer is 15 months old ! A MAYTAG !!!! Somthing in timer shorted ??? Kelly Koger

Sounds like you may have 2 problems. I am assuming when you push start you do not hear anything.
elements should not be on with door open ???? Correct You may have a grounded element. The element has broken or sagged and is touching the case. Check the heating coil. Unplug the unit and both wires to the coil. Check it with a meter, should be around 12 ohms. Then check from each side of the coil to the case/frame, both should be infinite ohms (open). If not the coil is grounded and may need replacing. This can cause it to run on high and the thermostats cannot regulate it.
The second problem is the no starting. With the unit unplugged remove one wire from the thermal fuse on the blower assembly and check it. Should be 0 ohms. This fuse is in the motor circuit. If this is blown replace it ASAP as it is a critical safety device. The usual cause for this blowing is a clogged vent system. The grounded element may have blown it. I would also check the thermal cut-out on the heater assembly. It may also be blown. This is just for the heater but if you fix the heater then you will end up with no heat.
Somthing in timer shorted ??? Always possible but I doubt it. The motor circuit in the timer would have to be open and the timer cannot keep the heater on all the time. |

I checked the ohms at The element . 10.6 .... Checked both sides of terminals to ground. Both sides grounded. Removed element. Found cermaic hold down broken letting coil swing out against uppper heat shield. Bingo........... Disconnected fuse and checked. Open circut. Bingo. You know your stuff buddy. Thank god theres people like you. HH Gregg wanted to sell me another Maytag dryer.. I refuse. I will spend 2000 dollars to fix this before I would buy another dryer just out of principle. Thank you so much.. Please check back and I will post how the repairs went. Thanks again.. Kelly Koger Muncie Indiana

Put in new element and fuse. Guy at apliance store said a restriction in the outlet hose can back up heat and cause the porcelan coil hold downs to heat up and break. There you go human error. This was no fault of my own. (lol) My two sons did it for there dad. Oh how I thank them. They had my outlet hose , which was 2' too long and it was all tangled up , which lead to the problems I was told by denman. DENMAN , YOU ARE THE MAN. You know your stuff. Thank you for your help !!!! Kelly KOger

You are welcome, glad it worked out for you.
And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause. |
