Hi! My oven won't light, and I'm hoping you can advise me on what I need to do.

Usually, when I turn on the oven, I first hear a click from the ERC and then a whoosh as the oven lights. Now, I hear the click, but no whoosh. Everything else on the ERC -- clock, timer, oven light, bake timer, self-clean, all works fine. The oven just doesn't light, and the display stays in pre-heat mode. I had a problem 3 years ago with the oven not lighting, and I had to replace the ERC, but my vague recollection from back then is that I didn't hear the click before the whoosh.

I'm hoping I don't have to replace the ERC again -- it's rather costly. Please tell me you think this is a problem with the bake igniter!

Thanks,
Ching

I would test the ignitor with an ohm meter if you have or can get one.

What kind of resistance should it have? Do I have to remove the igniter to test its resistance?

Hi Chang and Nat,

Let me step in. I believe this is what Whirlpool called Direct Spark Ignition oven and it does not have a classic glow coil igniter. Insted it has a huge spark module inside the control panel.

Chang, question to you: did you hear a clicking sound when you started Bake and/or Broil? If you did - how many times did it click?

After pushing the button to turn on the oven (beep), I hear one click, and that's it. No whoosh. Now that you ask this question, I'm beginning to wonder if I usually hear two clicks before the whoosh.

Ching,

Most likely the problem is a bad spark module but there is a small chance for the control board to be bad too.

- The part number for the spark module is AP3672576

Is there any way for me to make certain which one I need before I order?

Remove the red wire from the P2-4 terminal on the control board and check for 120VAC between that terminal and ground while the control calls for Bake.

If there is 120VAC then replace the spark module.

If there is no 120VAC then replace the control board.

- The part number for the control board is AP3180904
