I bought a compressor start device kit from appliancepartspros and installed it. The refrigerator started right up and was working fine. After about 3 minutes it stopped running (fan included) but the light still worked and the outlet is fine. I eventually unplugged it when it became obvious that it wasn't going to restart. I tried plugging it back in a few times but it would not restart. On about the 4th time, I plugged it back in and it started running and after about 2 hours is still running. Should I be worried that something is wrong? I would feel great about the fact that it's now working but it would sure help my anxiety level to know why it started, stopped and would not restart.

It is still running after about 3 hours but compressor is running very hot to the touch. Is this normal? If not, does anyone know what might be wrong?

since you said the fan stopped running as well, i would believe the refer entered defrost mode. That is probably why it stopped running. Now if the condenser fan stayed running but not the compressor there may be a problem, but I think you are ok.

I agree with abadfish66.

Defrost usually last about half an hour.

I think the fan you mentioned was the condenser (compressor) fan. If you were referring to the evaporator fan then check that the condenser fan is running correctly and that it's blades are clean.

Also check/clean the condenser coils under the unit.

The compressor will probably run for quite a while as it has to bring the unit down to set temperature. Once it gets there then it will start to cycle and will run cooler.
