If the cycle timer still has time on it and you open the door the dryer will shut off but when you close the door again it will start without having to press the start button.

This wastes a lot of energy if the clothes are dry and you don't have another load you need to throw in. I could leave the door open but of course the light will be on.

Is it the start button itself that is stuck on? Any way to test it?

The start button IS stuck. Replace it.
