My washer started making a funny noise mid-cylce. It then stopped running, started smelling like burnt rubber, and there was smoke. I heard that this might be a broken belt. Is that what it sounds like to you? If so, how do I replace the belt?

Remove the front panel (two screws on the bottom) and check the belt and the motor.
