I noticed the freezer was not freezing. Neither was the frig part. I took out the compressor and it does rattle (from what I have read, that means it's bad). What do I need to do to fix it. A compressor is expensive (262.00). Do I have any other options? Thank you.

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MSD2454GRQ Ref - SXS/I&W | AppliancePartsPros.com

I am sorry but are you pulling my leg.
The way your post reads; you cut all the lines to the compressor and shook it to see if it would rattle.
If this is the case then if I were you I would buy a new fridge.

I just double checked the calender to make sure it is not Aprils Fools Day.

Or did you disconnect the start relay (Item 4 Section 1)

Here is a good link on how to check components

If you replace the parts Mr. Denman suggested, and the compressor does not kick over. Try putting a hard start kit on it. Maytag compressors are known to lock up. The part # for the hard start kit is RCO-410. The directions are on the part. I always go for the hard start kit on that product. Never the overload and relay!!! Tom ApplianceEducator.com

I didn't cut the lines to the compressor. Your right, I disconnected the relay and that rattles. I did see that the specific maytag frig has a recall on the relay and a person is coming to look at it Saturday (and it would be free). I hope that's what it is. You can shake the compressor and it does rattle though?

Do you think it is the relay then? I hope so, I will find out Saturday 12-5pm. I hope it's just the relay.
