Unknown Age (it was here when I move in).

I have a great deal of ice buildup plus frost covering my food in my freezer. The ice is all over the walls and ceiling of the freezer. I have a high-low thermometer in there and verified that the air does warm to about 32F on occasion, but the melted ice doesn't go anywhere. In fact I have caught it in the middle of a defrost a few times: there's water wall over the inside which just refreezes after the cycle. This unit has an optional icemaker, but it is not installed. Freezer is on top of the refrigerator. Minimum temps are about -13F, average is somewhere between -6F and 0F.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

If you have frost all over the food and side walls start by checking your door seal. The easiest way is use a dollar bill or piece of paper put it in the door and see how easily it can be pulled around the gasket, if it pulls easily then you may need a new gasket or your door may have gotten bent over time.
