Hi,

I have a top unit Whirlpool refrigerator which has stopped going into defrost cycle. It otherwise works great. I did a couple of times manual defrost and it works great for about a fortnight before it stops cooling because of excessive frost on the element. I have checked out certain things: The frost is evenly spread out on the element, so its either the defrost thermostat or the heater element or the defrost timer. The bimetal thermostat seems to be working as I checked it while it had ice on it and it was showing continuity and without ice it shows open circuit. The heater element also shows continuity. So that leaves only the defrost timer. I am not able to locate it. It doesnot seem to be in the freezer compartment. In the fresh food compartment I took out the control panel unit but could not open it up for examination. Please help!

I cannot find any info on this unit.
Please check your model number.

Since you used the term "fortnight" I have a feeling that this is a UK unit and I will not be of much use.

The normal places for them is:

In the control console in the fresh food section.
Often there is a hole that will allow you to turn the timer cam to force a defrost cycle.

At the front bottom behin d the kick plate

At the raer bottom behind the cover.

You may have an adaptive defrost control (board), theses are usually in the control console.

If the unit has a main control board defrost may be built into this board.

Hi Thanks for the information. I found the defrost timer at the rear bottom behind the cover. The timer cam does not appear to turn at all as I observed it for a day. Is there any way it can be repaired or is replacing the only option?
