Heard a loud pop. Smelled smoke. Removed dryer front panel and noticed cycling tstat had fried itself. Is this common, or is there another issue that may have caused it to short out. I want to troubleshoot BEFORE replaceing the tstat.

Thanks!!

As far as I know this is not a common problem.
Your thermostat is a 4 wire unit, 2 are for the contacts and the other 2 are for a built in heater. Perhaps the heater coil broke and touched the contacts causing the thermostat to fry.

it would not be a bad idea to check your heating coil.
Unplug the machine.
Unplug both sides of the heating coil.
Measure the coil should be around 10 to 12 ohms.
Then measure from each side to the frame, both should be infinite ohms.
If not you have a grounded element and this needs to be repaired.
