The temp in the freezer will get up to 40 degrees when the freezer starts making the werid noise and then about 5-10 mins later when the noise stops the freezer will start dropping back down to 0 degrees. We have replaced the capacitor/relay switch serval times. We are thinking that it has something to do with the defrost on the freezer since it is going up in temp and then dropping back down. We have done all of the service checks in the service manual and everything seems to be fine. How can we tell if the defrost heater or the thermostat is bad?

You might have an intermittent evaporator motor. When it fails again, check to see what is not running.

We are thinking that it has something to do with the defrost on the freezer since it is going up in temp and then dropping back down. During defrost the evaporator fan, the compressor and the condenser fan should all be off. If this is the case when you get the temperature rise and the humming it may be that the defrost thermostat is not shutting the defrost heater off. Often you can see that they have bulged and need replacing.
Sometimes elements will vibrate (60 hertz hum).
Only way to tell is to remove the evaporator cover and see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. Odds are though when you remove the cover it will not hum for you. |
