In the ice maker bucket where the ice is held there is an auger to move the ice forward and in front of the auger is a blade and clear plastic circle that the ice goes thru before entering the chute where the ice is dispensed. You can choose to have either crushed ice or cubes depending on your selection on my model. My questions are---is the blade that crushes the ice supposed to be attached to this plastic circle? as it is just hanging loose on mine now. I don't believe this plastic circle with blade on it should be attached to the auger as it looks like it should turn only when you select the crushed ice option--Correct?

In summary is the blade that crushes the cubes supposed to be attached to this plastic circle that spins? This plastic circle and blade are not supposed to attached to the auger is it? I hope this meakes sense
Thank You

JP,

You're looking at this kinda backwards,

The plastic tube and flat metal blade are called a drive blade and drum.

The blade separates the cubes and forces them into the drive drum so they are driven to the front of the bin and dispensed.

The cubes are dispensed into the chopper blades in the front of the dispenser, behind the decorator panel.

(If you look up,into the cube openning, where the cubes fall out, you can see the chopper blades).

When you select "Cube", the the cubes fall into the front, and the cubes fall out the bottom opening and out the dispenser.

When you select "Crushed", the cube falls into the front, the chopper blade is activated and holds the cube in as the blades chop up the cube, and they are dispensed as crushed ice.
(That's why it takes a couple seconds longer to get crushed ice in the glass, than it does to get cubes).

Yes, the drive blade should be attached to the drum, and the drum is attached to the auger shaft, as are the chopper blades.

The auger shaft is designed and tooled to lock the drum, blade, and choppers in position to move and chop the cubes.

Hope that helps you.

What is actually wrong ?

Thank you for replying so quickly and expertly. I do better understand how it works now with your help, but need a little more help to better understand it. I understand by your reply that the plastic drum is to be attached to the auger, but are you saying the chopper blades are also attached to the auger?
It appears that the my blade and drum have separated from the auger, but is it possible that it came loose from the chopper blades as well?

JP,

Yes, it is possible that the chopper blades and spacers are worn , but they have little to do with the drum and blade coming loose, and yes, the blades attach to the auger shaft.

In essence, the auger shaft is square where the drum, blade, and choppers are located(you can't see that, until you dismantle the bin assembly).

The auger shaft is round from that point back to the drive hub(the part that you see, when you look in the bin).

You don't have a major problem at this time.

If you go to the AppliancePartsPros.com home page.

Select "find Parts"

Enter your model number and click "Search"

When you get to the parts screen, select "Ice Container" from the left side screens, it will load up in the main screen, and you'll have a visible reference, to help even more.

When you are ready to make repairs, you'll need to dismantle the bin assembly or may try and order a complete bin assembly, if available.

Good Luck,

:) :) :)
