the washer lights up after accepting the coins but will not run. could this problem be the lid assembly switch? if so, is this something i can install myself? is there a way of testing the switch before removing it? how difficult is it to install?

On some models the lid switch will stop the machine from agitating, on others it will allow agitation but not allow draining and spin. I do not have service documents for this model so I cannot tell you which yours is.
You need a wiring diagram for this model, which may be under the console. If you can open the console you can also access where the lid switch connects to the wiring harness, and jump it out to test if it is the problem. If it is, it should be an easy repair. If it is not the problem use the wiring diagram to trace the loss of power.
