My dryer timer switch had been acting intermittently (have to jiggle it to turn on the dryer); finally it would not turn on at all. I assumed it was the timer switch, ordered the replacement and installed it. The dryer now turns on, but again seems a bit intermittent. If I just push the timer switch directly, I can detect that it is making some type of "loose connection" (the drum will jump slightly), but I usually have to push it 3 or 4 times, (sometimes very slowly) to actually get it to engage.

I made sure all the connections to the timer were tight. Is it possible that I got a bad timer, or is maybe the wire harness intermittent? I also thought that maybe the buzzer was getting flaky, since that seems to be part of the circuit? Suggestions?

I am fearful the problem is with your motor. Get someone to help you. Depress the door switch and turn the drum while your friend presses the start switch. If it starts up, the motor is bad, and I recommend a new dryer given the age of your machine.
