I noticed the freezer items melting, unplugged and cleaned up the unit. When I plugged the unit back in, compressor just hums.
How can I determine if the compressor is bad or if I need to replace the start switch or the run capacitor?

If everything checks out OK then you may want to try a new relay kit (Item 4 in Section 1).
A bit of a gamble but worth it compared to the price of a new unit.
