I'm not sure of the model number - can't seem to locate it. The dryer has only two cycles (switch) and start switch. When I turn it to start it makes a humming noise but will not start. Could it be the starter switch?

Sounds more like a motor problem.

Try turning the drum by hand. Should turn fairly easily. If not could be the drum is jammed for some reason. You may want to try this on a couple other dryers to get a feel for it.
If it is difficult to turn run your fingers around the back and front of the tub to machine seal. To see if something has jammed between the tub and frame (bra wires are famous for this). Be careful in case the object is something sharp.
If nothing is jammed in there you will have to open it up and find the cause.

If it rotates OK.
This may take 2 people
Open the door
Manually hold the door switch closed
Push the start button and manually rotate the drum in the correct direction.
Watch your knuckles in case it starts up.
If it does start up, odds are high that you need a new motor.

Could also be that the motor is jammed solid with lint and this is preventing the Start/Run centrifugal switch from resetting (the unit is trying to start with out the motor's start winding in circuit.

May even be that the hum you hear is the motor running and the belt has broken.
If this is the case the unit will have heat and air flow but no drum rotation.

Thanks - this worked - I held the door switch on with my knee - turned the dryer on and rotated the drum at the same time and it has worked since. Didn't find anything stuck so hopefully it will continue working!!

:)

Please start your own thread using Post New Topic at the top of this section.
It just gets too confusing when threads contain different problems and/or machines.

Also a model number may help.
Model Number Locator

Did you find the wiring diagram in the control console when you had it open?
Getting tech info on GE's is a pain.

One last thing what was the original problem with the unit?

Thanks
