While heating a cup of water in the microwave. An electrical "pop" was heard coming from the microwave then the lights on the control panel went off. The circuit breaker did not flip off. The microwave no longer works. What happened? Is it something I can repair?

Most likely the problem is a shorted high voltage capacitor which caused the fuse to blow out. You can do it yourself if you know how to use a simple multimeter. You have to turn off the power to the unit and discharge the capacitor before do anything else.

I appreciate your reply. The information is most useful. It is sad that I don't know what a high voltage capacitor looks like, where it is located in the microwave, or how to discharge a capacitor. Any additional details and safety precautions are appreciated.

It is very dangerous to work with the microwave because of high voltage (about 4000 Volts) inside the control compartment . I would recommend to call a qualified tech to do it for you.

I appreciate the warning. This info pleases my wife for obvious reasons. She is making a case to buy a new unit.
