Hi there,

We had a new fridge delivered and duly plugged it into the exisiting socket. It seemed to work for a day or so and then died. Now it is not working and the store is sending a replacement.
Friends have advised the the problem might have due to our electricity circuits and the compressor might have been damamged due to low voltage. Is this likely ? we were running a fridger for several years and the only other thing running from the sockets is a gas stove.
If it was a problem with the circuit, surely the circuit breaker would have tripped or there would be some other symptom from the fridge?

Is is likely that a new model would be affected ? Or is there some sort of reset within the unit itself?

Now we are worried that the new one will blow too when we plug it in...is there anyway to check beforehand?

W,

Why did you replace your original fridge ?

Yes , Low Voltage or a weak wired circuit could effect the operation and damage a new units motor, and not just a refrigerator, any electrical product can be affected by high or low voltage.

With Low voltage the circuit breaker may not and usually does not trip open,

Did you notice if the lights in the room went dim, at any time, this is a good indication of a low voltage problem.

Also, I would expect you to hear a number of clicks , rattles or hums from the refrigerator back side when it was trying to start or run.

I don't think you had a power problem, based on your description and the fact you had a fridge in the same outlet before.

But it is a possibility.

You can check for a voltage problem, by using a meter set for AC Volts, and checking the voltage at the outlet. then plug something into the outlet(something with a motor) and check the voltage drop when the motor starts. Any Drop of 10% or more would indicate a weak wired circuit or low voltage.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the quick response Joe !

The reason we replaced the old fridge is that it was getting old and leaking water (although after reading some of the posts we could have repaired it simply enough it seems) !

We had noticed no unusual sounds from the fridge or dimming of lights in the house.

Will buy a multimeter and test the outlet before switching on the new fridge just in case.

Ok, then,

I don't really see a problem with the next unit.

Something minor, probably happenned during production or transport.

Loose connection on a wire or component, something like that.

But, I would check the voltage, just to be safe and eliminate that possibility.

Good Luck,
