Neither refrigerator or freezer working. Fans are working and a slight buzzing sound appears an attempt to get the compressor to run. I don't know how to determine if it is a relay, thermal cutoff or compressor problem. What is the procedure for determining which is causing the problem? Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you are asking how to test your compressor to see if its able to start, you are either going to have to ask someone you know who can jump start a compressor for free, or have a refrigerator repair service come out and test it for you. If you try to yourself you could very easily damage your compressor, or cause serious physical harm to yourself.

I have a meter and wondered if either the compressor or thermal cutoff or relay could be tested with it. Also doesn't the compressor runon 120, or is from a lower voltage?

We assume on this site that persons read the terms of use. We assume persons who ask for advice use normal caution around electrical items. Neither me or anyone else has given such a negative response to a request for advise. For Chassho, you can get complete info at my article "replacing compressor start devices" by putting it in the search box.
