I installed the Kitchenaid superba about 2 years ago. For the past several months, the glasses have not been getting clean, nor for that matter has the silverware. The dishwasher has had a slight odor to it. The stainless steel interior has not looked clean for a while.

Recently I thought that there was a hard water issue after seeing what I thought was a calcium buildup on the screen. I put a gallon of vinegar in the bottom of the machine, and ran it after several hours of soaking. This did not resolve the issue.

I ordered a new check valve. When I dissassembled the machine to install the check valve it became quite evident that the base of the dishwasher did not discharge all of the water. I had to use a sponge to get it out so I could replace the check valve. I also had to remove a some white sludge on the bottom, as well as some other debris. I did not replace the chopper blade, but there was a bit of white debris around the edges of that screen (as there was most places).

We just ran the dishasher again - the glasses in the top rack still did not clean well. there were still lip marks (not lipstick, just lip marks) on the glasses.

Is my pump bad? Is it time to throw in the towel and get a new dishwasher, or is there a straightforward repair that a DIY can do?

thanks so much for your help.

Since you have cleaned the pump I will assume it is OK.
It is not abnormal to have some water left in the bottom of the pump.

Check that the spray arm holes are clear.

Check that the water entering the machine is at least 120 degrees F.

You did not mention any drying problems so I am assuming your heating element is OK.

Check the fill level. Units usually fill to just under or just over the heating element. I am not sure which it is for this unit. Hopefully someone else will jump in with this info.

It is easy to check if low fill is the problem, just add a couple quarts of hot water after each fill of a cycle. If the dishes are now clean then low fill is probably the problem. Be careful to not overfill the unit re: activate the overfill switch.

If it is low fill the most likely culprit is a partially clogged screen filter on the input side of the water valve. Remove the valve from the unit and clean/check the screen filter.
Do not permanently remove it as it is there to keep crud out of the valve which could hold it open and cause a flood.
