Refrig not defrosting
Evaporative coils all frosted over. Did trouble shooting. I am not sure if part # AP 4366538 is the one I need. Can you help confirm that is what I need?
I put the refrig into service test mode I could get an open " o" but could not get a closed "S"
I checked continuity on heater and read 20 ohms
I am guessing the defrost timer is built into the control board. Is the timer built into the control board?
I cannot verify that part # AP 4366538 is what I need or if it is right for my particular model.
Thanks for your assistance. PJ

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to manually force defrost on this. I would replace the defrost thermostat, most probable failure.

Thank you for responding. you said: " I would replace the defrost thermostat, most probable failure." so, I just pulled the thermostat and, while it was frozen I confirmed that it has good continuity - it is a closed circuit. Did you mean to say - The Defrost Timer was the most probable failure - and not the Thermostat? My questions still remain... 1. Is the Defrost timer built into the control board? 2. Is that part number I quoted the correct one for this model refrig? I will phone appliance parts pros and hope for a positive response. PJ

I reviewed the wiring diagram and it looks to me like the timer is part of the PC control board.
I went ahead and contacted parts dept, and they agree, so I ordered the part.
If that doesn't fix my problem I'll post some more - otherwise - you can assume that replacing the PC board ( located just fwd of the light bulbs on this model) took care of my defrost probelm.

Your Maytag is probably a Whirlpool as Maytag is out of business. Before you install the new control board, go to web site www.applianceaid.com for a procedure to manually force defrost. This would confirm a bad board, if it fails to enter defrost.

Been there, and done that. Unable to force the defrost mode using the Service test. It fails to go into defrost mode. There is no other mechanical way to force it into defrost (other than re-wiring), but thanks anyway. Like I said, if I still have problems after I change the PC Board, I'll let you all know. thanks again.
