My sister has a side by side that neither side won't get cold. After investigating the problem I found that the condensor was filled with a very thick layer of dust. After cleaning, and plugging it in the frig still would not cool. The compressor was very hot to the touch. My question is do you think the compressor has gone bad? If so, do you think it is possible to replace it with a used one.

FYI: my sister is a school teacher, single mom, and going through a financial hardship at the moment. I am doing my best to help her as a brother thank you for taking the time out to help me in this matter.

Check the back of the freezer fo a lot of ice buildup, you may need to remove the rear panel. We'll pray it's not the compressor because you can't put an old compressor in a unit. Our average cost for a sealed system (compressor) repair is about $500. So lets check the other stuff first.
