I have an older Whirlpool that lives in the garage. Stopped one day, and thought that was it. But you can turn t-stat off, back on, and will run for 2-3 days then quit again. Worth fixing? Temp (overheat?) switch, or somewhere in the temp control?

Since this is in your garage, for starters i would clean the coils underneath with a coil brush and check to make sure the fan by the compressor(condenser fan) is running.
Let me know and we can go further if need be. Post as many details as possible.

Cleaned coils, and yes, fan runs. Cleaned everything yesterday, plugged in and set t'stat to run. Fan came on, stopped after few seconds, then started again. After fan ran for 3-4 minutes, compressor kicked in. Was running this morning when I left house, but is known to run 2-3 days, then quit. I guess I'll keep an eye on it.

When it quits does it have a frost build up in the back of the freezer?
When the copressor is on the condensor fan should be running as well as the evaporator fan. The only time they aren't supposed to run is while the unit is in defrost cycle.

on the back (or elsewhere). Does this one have a high-temp limit switch on the compressor or near the fan? Something to shut it off if it thinks it's getting too warm? I just wonder if it's gotten weak over the years, and just lets the motor quit. Or bad thermostat? Because I can turn it off (at the temp control) turn it back, and the thing starts immediately. I mean, if it's shot, so be it. But if I can replace a switch for maybe under $100, it's worth it.

And thanks for trying to help out here!

I pulled the switch out, tested for continuity. Showed none. Turned off, back on, and now have cont. May be the culprit. Requested a price quote from these guys. Thanks for all your help! Hopefully I can get it going again!

Question: is the garage heated,if not will have an effect poor condensing of refrigerant.
Also there is a "thermal-overload" on compressor which will open if compressor 1. gets hot or 2. draws excessive amperage. :)
