washer wont agitate but will spin. Can it be something simple like a belt? Washer is old & i dont want to invest a lot.

Remove the front panel. Lift the washer form the front and remove both belts and check them. Check if the pump pulley moves freely. Turn the transmission pulley CCW. If the pulley will not turn then the problem is the transmission. Post the results. Here are the break down diagrams for the Maytag washer Model A482Gene.
