MODEL # GSS25JFMB CC
s/n: HA254418
GE Side by Side

Hi, I found this site and it has helped me determine that I have a Defroster malfunction.

The evaporator becomes fully blocked with frost in about two weeks.
The Heater Assy has been hot enough to twist itself out of shape. the left side connector now points toward the frnt of the freezer, the right side points down. It has twisted itself almost 90 degrees. There are black burn marks inside the glass of the heater at each end.

I found a burned and melted white, wire zip tie in the lower right, behind the heater. It may have been holding the freon line to the heater assy??? it is not holding anyting now.

As bad as it looks, the heater reads about 24 ohms:rolleyes:

I still need assistance in identifying all the components related to the operation of the Defroster in my unit.

I cannot locate the Defrost timer - Is it in the computer board?

I have found the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater assy. in the freezer and found these part numbers for them:
Thermostat - p/n: AP3884317
Heater and Bracket Assy - p/n: AP3183311

I would like to replace these and any other parts involved with the Defrost Heater operation.

All else with the unit seems to work fine (when there is no frost present)
including being able to adjust the temperature controls.

I used the diagram here to optain part numbers:
Freezer section replacement parts for General Electric GSS25JFMBCC Refrigerator | AppliancePartsPros.com

From the above page I also found part numbers that I am unsure of thier use and location.
Can you tell me what these do and where they are located?
SENSOR TEMP FF, p/n: AP3185407
HARNESSFZ LT HTR, p/n: AP3190785

Can you provide a complete list of parts controlling the Defroster in this unit and where they are located?

Thank you for your help:)

There are four things that will cause this problem the defrost heater, the main board, the evaporator thermistor and the defrost thermostat.

The heater is most common. Since yours reads 24 ohms I don’t think it is the trouble although if it is out of shape as you say you may be better off replacing it anyway. I have seen where the heater would check ok and heat for about 5 seconds then open. This is very rare but can happen.

I don’t typically recommend this but since your heater looks so bad but has correct ohm reading you may want to jump out the heater just to see if it will heat. To do this, unplug the refrigerator. Then locate the main board; on the main board there will be a blue connector at the bottom of the board. Disconnect the connector and make a jumper to jump from the wire marked Defrost to the one marked Line. Leave the connector disconnected from the board and reconnect the refrigerator. The heater should come on and if not you have a bad heater.
