I do commercial refrigeration but customers have been asking me more and more to look at their residential stuff at their business. The condenser fan stopped working on this 4yr old fridge and I see 13v dc at the connection plug coming from the board and reading infinite res. on all fan motor wires, even on the new motor. You still have to replace the board even seeing 13v dc coming down from it? Anyone know if this would be covered under warranty at 4yrs old?

You have a two winding motor, one winding gets a square wave, the other gets 13 vdc. The motherboard driver blows out on any fan motor failure. Must replace both, motherboard AP4436216, motor AP3797248

If the board is bad then the fan could have caused it go fail in which case the safe way to go is to replace both parts.

Note that in a lot of cases the board will fail without the fan even being bad but no one wants to replace the board only to have the motor blow it out as soon as you plug it back in. Typically if the fan caused the board to fail there will be burnt resistors just under the J2 connector.

However if the fan is bad this doesn’t necessarily mean that the board is bad. The fact that you have voltage at the motor doesn’t mean anything. The motor has voltage on two of the wires all the time even when it isn’t running. You need to check it at the main board on the J2 connector. This page will help

If your main board is sending the correct voltage to the fan and the fan isn’t running it is ok just to replace the fan without the main board.

I hardly ever have to replace both parts but it will come back to haunt you, if the fan causes the new board to fail.
