I thought this would be a simple matter of using a suction cup device on the glass top and lifting the front of the glass up. Are there screws or some sort of rubber gasket that would make this more difficult?

No, it's not that easy.

There are 2 screws(1) on each side corner that have to be removed first.
(open the oven door and 1 screw on each corner will need to be removed).

Then you can raise to cooktop up at the front(like the hood of a car).

Thanks Joe. Another question if you or someone are still around. How do I tell if it is the ignitor or the under-glass element that is bad?

Carl,

I take for granted you mean infinite(burner control) switch ?

You can check both the switch and the wiring at the burners.

I would reccomend a live voltage check with a meter.

***You need to be very careful, not to shock yourself or short the switches or wires.***

You would disconnect the wires on the H1 and H2 terminals of the switch,

Attach your meter leads to the terminals, turn the switch on and check for 220 to 240 Volts AC coming out of the switch.

Or,

When you have the top up,

You can test for the same voltage(s) at the burner(same procedure as switches) and work back from there.

(Wire colors per diagram)
left front burner = orange and black
left rear burner = yellow and yellow
right front burner = brown and brown
right rear burner = blue and blue

I think that will get you diagnosed and repaired in no time.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)
