The washer will not turn on. When the start button is depressed, the 'od' message appears. The locking mechanism for the lid does not slid into the lid, therefore the machine doesn't operate. What should I do? Can I override the locking mechanism?

I feel you have lost signaling thru the Left Hand Lid Lock. It’s bit late so I will make this quick. The Control board looks for an Lid Open/Lid Closed signaling thru the Left Hand Lid Lock. There is a magnetic reed relay operated by the lid magnet to perform this signaling. If the Control board fails to see three competed wash cycles it will extend an OD error code. I would remove the Left Hand Lid Lock and carefully open the case halves and look for a broken wire on the magnetic reed relay. Most often the black wire as seen in the pic I will attach.
If there is corrosion you can clean up and if the black wire has broken you can re-solder back on or just replace the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly. You can purchase thru this site.
As a technical owner I would trace the +12VDC signaling from the Control Board down to the Left Hand Lid Lock and back to Control Board before I replaced any parts.
You will need the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual. It will show you how to release the washer top from the base….just watch lid doesn’t fall back onto the console, duct tape it closed.
If you want more help let me know I got to pull the plug for now.....Dick

Thanks so much for posting this info... I had the same problem occur on my Maytag Neptune washer yesterday, and I indeed found a broken wire at the reed switch. I quickly resoldered the connection and fixed my problem. I think I'll order a replacement module as well. Thanks again!

My washer would start and just stop in the middle of the cycle, 3 beeps is all I got, no code etc.. After reading this post, I checked mine. Sure thing my red wire was broke. Fixed it and cleaned all the crap out of the switch and now works fine... for now
