Whirlpool Catalyst Gold Series Washer, Won't agitate or spin

I went to rotate my laundry only find my washer full of water. When I tried to start a new cycle...it filled but only made a humming sound. I tried to do a spin cycle but still no movement......only a humming sound. So we emptied out the water by hand and my DH took it apart.
The coupler looks fine....no wear or cracks. He also removed the agitator and there was nothing stuck there.
When he removed the motor from everything it is attached to....it hums and slowly...struggling almost......will turn. If my husband starts to help it turn.....it picks up and will begin to spin.
We "think" it must be the motor but DH is wondering if the capacitor is bad. We just don't know how to check that. I hate to go buy a new motor if it's the capacitor....or vice versa. Should I buy both? Is there a way to tell if it's bad motor or capicitor?
I am going to be on the hunt for parts tomorrow with toddler in tow so any advice ya'll can give me to save me a headache would be appreciated.:)

if you read the cap witha ohm meter it should read a very high resistance if it reads a short then it is bad, More than likey it is the motor but test the cap
