My Maytag dryer starts, heats and drys clothes properly but does not stop by itself.
The timer control knob does not advance in the Auto or Timed cycles.
The end of cycle buzzer does not sound.
I must turn the timer control knob to off to stop the dryer.
I can hear a humming sound from the timer control until I turn it to the off position.

thanks...

Since neither auto or timed dry advance the timer and you can hear it advancing my guess would be that the timer is shot. Either the motor or it's gearing has a problem.

This could be double checked by measuring the voltage going to the timer motor while running.
If you have 120 volts AC but the timer does not advance it needs replacing.
NOTE: Be very careful if you do this as there is 240 at the timer and it is lethal.
