Okay guys. Here is a tricky one. The washer will fill, agitate but won't empty, rinse or spin. I first thought is was the timer because there was a weird electrical noise coming from it like something was shorting out. However, after further inspection of the lid switch I found tape holding it together. When I tested the lid switch for the "click", I got nothing. When I tapped the lid switch and got a click the timer started making that funny "shorting out" sound and it didn't empty, rinse or spin. So, I know I need to replace the lid switch since tape is holding it together but what about the timer? Is the timer not working because the lid switch is bad and only works sometimes? (I bought the washer used). Thanks for any help. I would hate to buy the timer if I only need the switch. I do have an extra switch from a Kenmore 29962891 but I don't know if that would cross reference with the whirlpool and work.

I think I have the correct part numbers:
timer: 3953321
lid switch: AP3100003 or PS350434

Start with the lid switch assembly(you have the correct part number).

New lid switch and step by step instructions on how to replace the lid switch: Part number: AP3100003
Part number: AP3100003

Yes, the malfuntioning lid switch, could be the cause of all your complaints,

The "shorting out" noise in the timer and the no rinse or spin could be the effects of a lid switch problem as well(no line voltage to the timer motor or start winding at the motor).

I could not cross reference your Kenmore part number to a Whirlpool number, sorry.

Bypassing the lid switch, for test purposes only, can confirm our suspisions.

You probably have a bad timer and motor in this washer. I would start with temporarily shorting the lid switch, then checking current with an amprobe, or at least checking with a meter. If you have neither, without meter data, we are just guessing which part is bad.

It was the lid switch! It took about 10 minutes to repair and test with a load of laundry. Thanks
