The compressor works fine but doesn't start without turning unit off and then restarting after a few minutes. I replaced the relay and overload with a new Compressor Start Device Kit. Fridge was working. Next morning was again not working. Does the one external capacitor contol both start and run? The capacitor seems the most likely problem. Is it possible to check that before replacing it? Does the compressor have an internal capacitor that is separate from the one listed in the wiring diagram and on the parts list diagram?

Thanks, RF

RF,

A defective capacitor on a refrigerator is not a common occurence, but is still a possibility, yes it is momentarily in use, in the run cycle and start cycle of the compressor .

You test it the same as any other capacitor (A momentary deflection up,then a decrease back down).

Are you sure you have the proper voltage when the compressor starts(105 volts AC minimum required).

Was there anything wrong with the cooling effect of the refrigerator before you worked on it ?

I'm wonderring if you may have a compressor starting to fail, oe a sealed system problem ?

I hope this has given you some assistance.

I would suspect either an intermitent defrost timer or cold control behind the control panel When it fails next time, see if it will start when you tap on the control panel cold control AP3037004, timer AP3110896

Thanks Joe. The fridge was working until the electricity went out for about 2 hours, about 2 weeks ago. I checked it and found the coils extremely dirty so thought it overheated and shut off. I cleaned the coils, turned the control to off, waited, turned on to setting 3, and all was well. About 2 days later same thing happened - ice melting, freezer not working properly, lights and fans all working correctly. Checked to see if inside coils were frozen up, but all were clean. Reset controls again, all worked. A couple days later same issue again. I decided since the compressor was running fine after reset (it did seem a little hot to the touch), it must have something to do with the starting components. I have not checked the voltage. The other appliances are working properly, and this one works after reset, so I did not consider low voltage as the problem. I will check it.

You may want to follow richappy's reccomendation and tap or wiggle the temperature control knob, and see if it starts and runs.

I didn't consider a bad control, my fault !!!!:o
