I am having trouble with my refrigerator. The fresh food side tends to get warm after a a few days I would then shut the refrigerator off and thaw it out completely then turn it back on and seems to work great untill the cooling coils build up alot of frost on them. It seems to me that the refrigerator is not defrosting. I pulled the heating element out and the glass around it is a grayish color and has a crack in the glass but i tested it for continuity and it tests good. I also applied an external power to the element and the element lit up and glowed orange and got real hot after about 15 - 20 seconds so I asume that the element is still good and working? The second question I have is how do I force this Refigerator into defrost mode so i can test the element wires for power when it calls for the element to com on?? I dont see a manual defrost timer so I am thinking it is controlled by the mother board? Any help would be great!!

P.S. The model # above is supposed to be: GSS22KGMACC

Thanks Dennis

Ok i am adding to this post!! I checked a few terminals on the mother board. i checked the Blue larger plug with the 3 prongs on it the left says COMP. the middle says DEFR. the right says LINE, I checked the center that said DEFR. and i get 114 Volts but on the inside of the freezer I have 2 wires coming down to the heter element red/pink on the right and a Blue on the left. When I test each wire touching one probe to the wire and the other probe to a screw ground I get 28 volts and I get that reading on both the wires. So if I get 114 Volts fron the middle Blue wire on the mother board that says DEFR. and the other wires inside going to the Element only 28 Volts what would my problem be????

Thankd Dennis

Is it the round one mounted to the top of the cooling coil??
and would this cause my heater not to come on??

Thanks Dennis

Also How can I FORCE this refrigerator into Defrost mode si I can test to see if everything is functioning instead of sitting and waiting all day??

Thanks Again Dennis

Yes, this is probably your problem, but this defrost thermostat is a special high temperature one.
You can force defrost at the motherboard in the back. Just go to the sticky above "GE (GSS & PSS model refrigerators)" for info on this.

Hi Rich,

I found the Sticky and thanks for the info!! I just tested the defrost and it is the Defrost Thermostat just like you said. I jumped out the Thermostat and the heater came on!! I just ordered the parts and I will install as soon as I get them! I also ordered a new heater with the dual elements anyway to replace the old one. The old one still works it just has a crack in the glass tube so I just as well replace too!! Ill let you know how it works as soon as I install all!!

Thanks Again Dennis
