Help,
trying to fix this appliance myself since i am out of work right now. had an estimate from a handyman at over $200.00 yikes.
Problem for this gas stove is that the red/orange light is on in the oven but it is very slow to heat up, after 2 months of this, the oven now does not heat at all. I can smell the gas and the last time it heated up, i heard a small explosion in the oven. Can it be the ignition that needs to be replaced? How hard is that to do myself? Reading on line states it is not hard but i want to make sure that is what is wrong. Please help.

Helen,

Most likely the problem is a bad oven igniter. I'm assuming the problem is with the Bake mode, so this is the bottom igniter.

If you know how to handle a simple tools, this part is not too difficult to replace yourself. Remove the oven floor and the flame spreader.

- The oven igniter Part number: AP2150412
Part number: AP2150412

Gene,
My husband and son were able to fix my oven with the part you named in your original post. Thank you so much for your help. It was a pretty easy project for my son and husband to fix and they got some bonding time.

I do have a second question. How do I know if the self cleaning option is working in my Tappan oven. The model number was in my original email to you. Please help once again.

Thanks
Helen

The easiest way to figure it out is to turn the self clean on.
