A repair man had me turn the refrigerator on, he looked inside briefly, had another quick look in the freezer and said it was the compressor which would cost me $800 to fix. He handed me a bill for $40 and left. Can I fix it myself?

Your compressor may have shut down on it's thermal overload, or it's start relay failed. Remove back of fridge and verify condensing fan is blowing air, if ok, but compressor not running, remove cover on the side of compressor and pry off start relay. The overload+ start relay may be in one package. Just order a new one from this site.However, if the compressor is running but not cooling fridge, yes you probably have a bad compressor or bad freon leak. Most failures I see are a leaking evaporator, cost is usually prohibited for most fridg's.
