Greetings one & all.
Top freezer
Is there any reason a Hotpoint timer for this model fridge should take 15 hours to initiate a defrost cycle and then take 70 minutes to complete the defrost mode?
I'm having the typical defrost problems with this fridge. Freezer is cold, fresh food box was getting warm.
Initially, I found a bad thermostat. It was replaced after thoroughly defrosting the iced up coils. I checked the timer; contacts checked out but the run time for the timer seemed way out of whack. It took 15 hours for the timer to initiate a defrost cycle and then the defrost cycle lasted for 70 minutes before switching back to cooling mode. Seems way to long.
After replacing the thermostat and defrosting the coils, the fridge worked OK for about 24 hours. -10* in the freezer and 30* in the fresh food. After 30 hours, freezer has risen to 10* and fresh food has risen to 42*.
So unless someone can tell me that the timer is supposed to take this long on this model, I think I need to replace the timer.
Any input?
Thank you

First I would reccomend you check and clean your condenser coils thoroughly, for a more efficient operation of the unit.

Your defrost cycle is controled through your defrost timer. After 8 to 10 hours of "accumulated" compressor run time, the timer will advance into the defrost segment of the timer.

The accumulated run time is subject to several conditions and may take 12 to 24 hours (on average) to advance into the defrost cycle( dirty coils, door openings and amount of product in unit, room temperature).

However, the average time from start to finish of a defrost cycle is 30 minutes or less, from start of cycle to compressor start.

I would have to think you may have a malfunctioning defrost timer, with the description you have supplied.

I hope this is of some help to you.
