machine gets way too hot to the touch. cleaned out the exhaust duct, and replaced hi limit thermostat on heating coil housing with a used spare I already had. How can I test that? Or Maybe the problem is the cycling thremostat mounted on the exhaust duct??

In this situation it sounds like more than component has failed, so I would replace all of the thermostats and check the heating element for grounding. Also clean out the interior duct work.
